HomeAire: Clearing the Air

Granite Countertops on Today Show

A previous Clearing the Air blog post discussed recent concerns about whether granite countertops contribute to radon in the home.  The American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (AARST) issued a statement declaring that “at this time the EPA does not believe sufficient data exists to conclude that the types of granite commonly used in countertops are significantly increasing indoor radon levels.”   The AARST radon statement recommends that if you are concerned about radon in the home, you should buy a home radon test kit.  Additionally,  AARST stated that the contribution from building materials to the indoor radon concentration is very dependent upon the building ventilation rate.

Recently, NBC’s Today Show also featured a segment focused on granite countertops and radon.  One of the featured experts who appeared on the show is Stan Liebert of  Air Quality & Environmental Services in Ballston Lake, NY, a radon testing and mitigation professional and HomeAire dealer.

Whether or not you have granite countertops, the EPA recommends testing every home for radon. If radon is detected in dangerous amounts (4.0 pCi/L or higher), it is imperative to seek the help of a radon professional.  Click here to contact an indoor air quality professional.
